Focus music vs. lo-fi: what actually works?

Three things are sold as the answer — lo-fi, engineered “functional” music, and binaural beats. The research is less flattering to all three than any of their marketing, and it is clearest about the one variable nobody argues over.

The short answer, before the evidence

For most people, on most tasks, the choice between lo-fi and any other instrumental background audio is a small effect at best, and it depends more on what you are doing than on what you are playing. The one finding that replicates reliably is not about genre at all: it is that words in the audio cost you on work made of words.

That is a duller answer than “this one is scientifically designed and that one is not,” and it is the one the literature supports.

What the background-music research reports

The largest synthesis is still Kämpfe, Sedlmeier and Renkewitz's meta-analysis of background music in adults. Its headline result is a global null effect — and the authors are explicit that this is not the same as “music does nothing.” It is what you get when opposing specific effects average each other out. Breaking it down, they report that background music disturbs reading, has small detrimental effects on memory, and has positive effects on emotional response and on sports performance, with music tempo pulling the tempo of whatever you are doing along with it (The impact of background music on adult listeners: a meta-analysis, Psychology of Music 39(4), 424–448, 2011). The authors' own stated limitation is that relatively few of the studies allowed an effect size to be calculated, so the power to detect those specific effects was not high.

Read that list again with a work task in mind. If your afternoon is reading and remembering, the meta-analysis points mildly against background music. If it is repetitive, physical, or a matter of getting started at all, it points mildly for it. Same audio, opposite advice, decided by the task.

Lyrics: the one variable that is not close

A 2023 study in the Journal of Cognition put college students through verbal memory, visual memory, reading comprehension and arithmetic under three conditions — silence, instrumental music, and music with lyrics. Music with lyrics hindered verbal memory, visual memory and reading comprehension at about d = −0.3; its effect on arithmetic (d = −0.19) was not credible. The instrumental condition — which was hip-hop lo-fi — neither credibly helped nor hindered any task (Should we turn off the music? Music with lyrics interferes with cognitive tasks). The authors note the honest sting in that result: lo-fi is marketed as a study booster, and their data lend little support to the claim. Limitations: one sample of college students, laboratory tasks, one lo-fi playlist standing in for a genre.

So the defensible version of “lo-fi is good for studying” is lo-fi is instrumental, and instrumental is the half of this question with an answer. That is worth knowing. It is not a property of the aesthetic.

What about engineered “focus music”?

Some products argue that ordinary music is the wrong comparison, and that audio built to a specification does something background music cannot. Brain.fm makes that case directly, and also argues against binaural beats specifically — its own FAQ calls the product “not binaural beats,” describes itself as “binaural beats 2.0,” and states that binaural beats primarily affect the lower brain rather than where thinking happens.

We are the binaural-beats app, so we have an obvious interest here, and the useful thing we can do with it is not return the favour. We are not going to answer a claim we cannot source with a counter-claim we cannot source either. What we can say is what our evidence page says with the studies attached: research is mixed, and most studies are small, the pooled meta-analytic effect across 22 binaural-beat studies is a standardised g = 0.45 rather than a percentage or a multiplier (Garcia-Argibay, Santed and Reales, Psychological Research, 2019), and the same literature contains clear null results. Anyone selling you a large number about audio and attention — us, them, or a playlist — owes you the study, the sample size and the limitation next to it.

How to answer this for yourself in a week

The reason all of this stays unresolved in general is that the effect is small and the moderators are personal. That makes it a good candidate for testing on yourself, and a bad one for taking on authority.

  • Fix the task, not the audio. Pick one recurring block of real work — the same kind, at the same time of day. Varying the work and the audio together tells you nothing.
  • Run three conditions, not two: silence, instrumental, and whatever you normally play. Silence is the condition people skip, and it is the control.
  • Judge by output, not by feel. Participants in the study above correctly noticed that lyrics were hurting them; they were also inclined, in retrospect, to rate the instrumental condition as helpful when it measurably was not.
  • Change one thing. If you switch genre, volume and session length at once, you have run one experiment with three answers.
