What the evidence says about binaural beats

Binaural beats are a real auditory percept. The research on outcomes is mixed and mostly small-sample, so it does not support dependable or app-specific promises.

The mechanism is not established as a reliable outcome tool

A 2023 systematic review of 14 EEG and MEG studies found five results consistent with brainwave entrainment, eight contradictory results, and one mixed result. Samples ranged from 4 to 47 people. The review’s limitation is not a minor footnote: varied methods and small samples leave the mechanism inconclusive. In a controlled laboratory physiology study, Perez, Dumas and Lehmann found some connectivity patterns from binaural beats, but weaker cortical entrainment than monaural beats and no mood modulation. Its limitation is scope: it measured laboratory physiology, not everyday outcomes or this app.

Focus and cognition: an average result is not a productivity promise

A 2019 meta-analysis combined 22 studies and 35 effect sizes across memory, attention, anxiety, and pain, reporting Hedges’ g = 0.45. That is a small-to-moderate average association or intervention contrast, not a percentage, multiplier, or result for Binaura.

Its limitations matter: outcomes and protocols differed, many underlying studies were small, and effects varied with beat frequency, exposure timing, and comparator. The analysis did not measure ordinary workplace productivity. A 2022 randomized placebo-controlled study found no effect on its ranked working-memory or response-time measures, and a later sustained-attention study also reported no effect from the tested stimulation.

Sleep research does not support a predictable result

In a double-blind study of 43 people, two weeks of binaural-beat and sham audio both improved insomnia-severity scores, with no statistically significant between-group difference. Reported changes were −4.32 and −2.71. Limitations include the small sample, short follow-up, and audio exposure in both groups.

A 2024 exploratory daytime-nap study analysed 12 healthy young adults and reported shorter latency to slow-wave sleep under one condition. Its stated limitations were the small sample, exploratory design, no multiple-comparison correction, daytime naps rather than ordinary overnight sleep, and no participants with insomnia. It cannot establish a reliable time-to-sleep result for app users.

Relaxation and anxiety ratings: mixed, and mixed in with music

A 2025 systematic review identified 10 interventional trials of music and binaural-beat interventions in young adults, with samples from 18 to 262 and roughly 970 participants in total, and concluded that heterogeneity and small samples limit certainty. Its central limitation is structural rather than a flaw of the review: because it pools music with binaural beats, it cannot isolate an effect of binaural beats on their own. That confusion between an audio intervention and this specific one runs through most of this literature. Binaura is not a treatment for anxiety or insomnia. If sleep or anxiety problems keep happening or interfere with daily life, talk with a licensed clinician.

How to read a study about binaural beats

Four things decide what a result can mean, and they are usually the four a headline drops.

  1. What the comparison was. In this field the control group is usually also listening to something — sham audio, music or silence. The sleep study above is the clearest case: both groups improved, so the question it answered was whether the binaural group improved more. It did not.
  2. What was measured. A laboratory task, a self-reported rating after one session, a nap under polysomnography, and sleep at home over weeks are four different outcomes. A result for one is not a result for another.
  3. How many people. Samples of 4 to 47 in the entrainment review, 12 analysed in the nap study, 43 in the sleep study. Small samples give unstable estimates in both directions, which is why this literature holds strong positive findings and clear null findings side by side.
  4. What kind of audio. Monaural beats, isochronic tones, music and nature sound are different interventions. The one direct comparison here found binaural beats entrained the cortex more weakly than monaural beats; if that distinction matters to you, see binaural, monaural and isochronic beats.

What an effect size is not

The pooled Hedges’ g of 0.45 is the most quoted number in this field and the most misread. It is a standardised average difference across 22 heterogeneous studies and 35 effect sizes. It is not a percentage, not a multiplier, not the probability that something will work for you, and not a measurement of this app. An average across studies that disagree also conceals that disagreement: the same literature contains a randomized placebo-controlled null result on working memory and response time.

What this means for Binaura

No study listed here evaluates Binaura as a product. A result from another audio intervention, including music or monaural beats, is not proof about binaural beats or this app. Binaura offers soundscapes and breathing exercises for focus, sleep and relaxation; it does not promise a fixed outcome.

What would change this page

A pre-registered, adequately powered, sham-controlled trial with a named outcome, published in a peer-reviewed journal and independently replicated, would change what we are able to say. A rise in search volume for a stronger claim, or a competitor outranking this page with one, would not. We will update this page when the evidence changes, not when the ranking does.
