Delta waves explained: the sound of deep sleep

Delta is the slowest rhythm an EEG records and the signature of the deepest stage of sleep. It is also the most misused word in sleep audio, and the fix is one distinction: the band describes your brain, not the file.
What delta activity is
Delta is the slow end of the EEG spectrum: 0.5–4 Hz in the conventional clinical banding, the slowest and highest-amplitude of the classically described rhythms (Normal EEG Waveforms, StatPearls, NCBI Bookshelf). Half a cycle to four cycles per second — slower than anything you could hear if it were sound, which is the first hint that the audio and the brainwave are two different objects.
Sleep scoring makes the definition concrete. Under the American Academy of Sleep Medicine rules, sleep is scored in 30-second epochs, and stage N3 — deep sleep, slow-wave sleep — is scored when more than 20% of an epoch consists of slow-wave activity, with delta predominating between 0.5 and 2 Hz at amplitudes above 75 µV (Sleep Study, StatPearls, NCBI Bookshelf). That threshold is worth sitting with: “deep sleep” is not a place you arrive at, it is a name for a stretch of recording in which enough of the signal is slow and large.
How much of a night it is, and when
N3 accounts for roughly 10–20% of total sleep time in adults and occurs mostly in the first third of the night. The rest of the night divides into about 2–5% N1, 45–55% N2 and 20–25% REM, with REM arriving in four to five episodes and NREM–REM cycles running 70–100 minutes at first and 90–120 minutes later on (Normal Sleep, Sleep Physiology, and Sleep Deprivation, Medscape). These are population figures that shift with age and vary between people; consumer sleep trackers frequently quote a wider band such as 13–23%, which is a reminder that the number depends on the source and the method, not that one of them is secret knowledge.
The practical reading is that the deep-sleep portion of your night is front-loaded and finite. It is not something more of which is available on request, and it is not something an audio track has been shown to add.
The part the labels get wrong
A track sold as “delta waves” is not made of delta waves. You cannot hear 2 Hz: human hearing spans roughly 20 to 20,000 Hz (Neuroanatomy, Auditory Pathway, StatPearls), so a delta-rate vibration is an octave and a half below the floor. No speaker in your headphones is producing it.
What a delta binaural track actually is: two audible tones, one per ear, whose difference is a number inside the delta band. Play 200 Hz and 202 Hz and the difference is 2 Hz — the beat frequency is the difference between the two tones (Oster, Scientific American, 1973) — so the track gets called a 2 Hz delta track. The 2 Hz is a subtraction, and the pulse you perceive is produced by your own auditory system comparing the two ears, not by anything in the recording. So “delta track” is an accurate description of a file and a promise about nothing. Whether such a track influences your own delta activity is a research question, and the answer is that research is mixed, and most studies are small. What to do with this
Use the label as a filter for the kind of sound you want — slow, low, uneventful, nothing that resolves or surprises — and not as a specification for an outcome. That is a real reason to prefer one track over another at midnight, and it does not require the mechanism to be true.
